Six signs you have outgrown MYOB

MYOB is excellent for small businesses. These are the signals that tell us a business is ready to move to Business Central.

MYOB cannot scale with your business

MYOB AccountRight and MYOB Business are designed for small businesses with straightforward accounting needs. Once you have multiple departments, complex inventory, project costing, or more than 20 staff, you will hit the ceiling. Business Central is built for mid-market businesses and scales with you as you grow.

You are managing data across too many systems

Most MYOB users end up with a patchwork of disconnected tools — MYOB for accounting, a separate system for inventory, spreadsheets for reporting, and another tool for CRM. Business Central brings all of this into a single platform, eliminating the manual reconciliation that consumes your finance team's time.

Your reporting requires manual Excel work

If every management report starts with a MYOB export and ends with hours of formatting in Excel, your reporting infrastructure has broken down. Business Central has native reporting built in, and integrates directly with Power BI for live dashboards that update automatically without manual intervention.

Month-end close takes longer than it should

A slow close is almost always a sign that data is being manually reconciled between systems. Business Central automates the reconciliation process, with approval workflows, automated journal entries, and real-time visibility across all entities — reducing a week-long close to a day or two.

You have outgrown MYOB's user and permission model

MYOB's user access controls are basic. Business Central provides granular role-based access, approval hierarchies, and full audit trails — the kind of financial controls that auditors and boards expect from a growing business.

You need multi-entity or multi-currency capability

MYOB handles single-entity, single-currency businesses reasonably well. The moment you add a second entity, a foreign currency supplier, or an overseas subsidiary, the limitations become acute. Business Central handles multi-entity consolidation and multi-currency transactions as standard features.

How we migrate you from MYOB to Business Central

A structured six-phase process that protects your data and keeps your business running throughout the migration.

01

Discovery and scoping

We map your current MYOB configuration — chart of accounts, customer and supplier records, inventory items, open transactions, and any integrations. We document your requirements and identify any gaps between what MYOB does today and what Business Central will do after go-live.

02

Data migration design

We design the data migration approach for your chart of accounts, master data (customers, suppliers, items), and opening balances. We identify which historical transaction data to migrate and which to archive, and build the migration scripts accordingly.

03

Business Central configuration

We configure Business Central to match your business processes — approval workflows, posting groups, dimensions, payment terms, and user roles. For Australian businesses, we configure GST, BAS reporting, and bank feeds. For businesses using Wiise, we configure the Australian payroll module.

04

Integration setup

If you have systems that currently connect to MYOB — a payroll system, an eCommerce platform, a third-party inventory tool — we rebuild those integrations to connect to Business Central instead. We use Power Automate or Azure Integration Services depending on complexity.

05

Testing and user acceptance

We run a full test migration in a sandbox environment and work through your key business processes with your team. We fix any issues before the live migration and train your users on the new system.

06

Go-live and hypercare

We run the live data migration, cut over to Business Central, and provide intensive hypercare support in the weeks immediately after go-live. Your team has direct access to our consultants while they build confidence in the new system.

Microsoft Business Central

Best for businesses already in the Microsoft ecosystem — Teams, Outlook, Excel, Power BI. Strong manufacturing, distribution, and project management capabilities. Ideal for businesses with 20–500 staff and complex operational requirements.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a MYOB to Business Central migration take?

Most MYOB to Business Central migrations take 3–5 months from kickoff to go-live for a standard SME scope. Businesses with complex inventory, multiple entities, or significant integration requirements should plan for 5–8 months. We provide a detailed project timeline during the discovery phase.

Can we migrate our historical data from MYOB to Business Central?

Yes. We migrate your chart of accounts, customer and supplier master data, inventory items, and opening balances as standard. Historical transaction data (invoices, payments, journals) can also be migrated, though many businesses choose to archive historical data in MYOB and start fresh in Business Central with opening balances only.

Should we migrate to Business Central or Wiise?

Wiise is built on the Business Central platform and adds Australian payroll, GST, and BAS compliance out of the box. If you are an Australian SME and payroll is a key requirement, Wiise is often the better choice. If you are a larger business, have international operations, or need advanced manufacturing or distribution capabilities, standard Business Central may be more appropriate. We help you make this decision during the discovery phase.

What happens to our MYOB data after migration?

Your MYOB data remains in MYOB after migration — we do not delete anything. Most businesses keep their MYOB subscription active for 12 months after go-live to access historical reports, then cancel once they are confident all historical data they need is accessible in Business Central or archived elsewhere.

Do you run MYOB and Business Central in parallel during the migration?

Yes. We recommend a parallel run period of at least one month where both systems are active simultaneously. This allows your team to verify that Business Central is producing the same results as MYOB before you fully cut over. The parallel run is particularly important for payroll and GST reporting.
